REEFER MADNESS AUDITIONS JAN 7, 2024

Fairfield Center Stage (Christy McIntosh-Newsom, Artistic Director; Eli Newsom, Executive Producer) is holding OPEN AUDITIONS (in-person and video submissions) for its upcoming winter musical production of REEFER MADNESS on January 7th from 5-7pm @ Trevi Lounge in Fairfield. See below for audition specifics. The show will run March 15-24 in downtown Fairfield. Seeking a diverse cast of 18+ year old singers, actors, and dancers of all types to join our production. FCS is a community theater group and all roles are open. Non-Equity, no pay.

The staff for REEFER MADNESS includes Maggie Meath (Director), Eli Newsom (Music Director), and Emily Frangipane (Choreographer). REEFER MADNESS will run at Trevi Lounge in Fairfield for two weekends, March 15-24. Rehearsals are generally Mon-Thurs evenings 6-9pm and Sundays 2-7pm. Actors will not be needed every day until we get closer to opening. All tech rehearsals are required and will take place the evenings of March 10-14. Rehearsals will begin around Monday, February 5.

When: 
In-person open call auditions will occur on Sunday January 7th from 5-7pm. If you are unable to attend in-person auditions you may submit your initial audition virtually (see below for submission instructions). Appointments are highly recommended for in-person auditions. See below for the audition signup link. If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, please cancel your audition appointment and submit an audition video.  

Callbacks for REEFER MADNESS will take place on Tues Jan 9 in the evening. Note that not all roles require a callback.

What to prepare:
Please prepare a brief song (under one minute) from or in the style of the show (singing from the show is ok). Please bring sheet music in the correct key. A cappella singing is discouraged, and bluetooth/mobile devices with backing tracks will not be permitted.

After reserving an audition time slot, you will receive a link to fill out a digital audition form as well as submit a resume/headshot/recent photo.

VIDEO AUDITION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: If you are submitting your audition virtually,  please submit (1) a video of you singing (guidelines follow) and (2) the audition form (link below). Video: sing an approximate one-minute section of a song in the style of the show (contemporary musical theater (comedic song) - singing from the show is ok). Please use an accompaniment track (i.e. karaoke track, piano track, other instrumental track, guitar, etc). Some backing tracks can be found on YouTube. Please no a capella singing, as the production team needs to hear singing with accompaniment.

If we need to see you at callbacks, you will be notified by Mon Jan 8 at 5pm (callbacks will be the following evening).

Character Descriptions:
A NOTE ON CASTING: We are committed to inclusive casting. Seeking actors, singers and dancers of all physical types, gender identities, racial identities, and physical abilities. Due to the content of the show, all cast members must be over the age of 18 years (actors age 17 feel free to reach out to us @ info@fairfieldcenterstage.org).

JIMMY HARPER – A wholesome, innocent, high school teenager who runs into trouble after he is lured into the dangerous world of reefer

LECTURER – A severe authority figure who warns the audience of the perils of Reefer Madness. (Doubles as Goat-Man, Mr. Poppy, Irish Priest, Old Man, Radio Announcer, Ticket-Taker, Policeman, FDR)

MARY LANE – Jimmy's sweetheart, a naïve, virginal teenage girl

JACK STONE – The handsome and ruthless proprietor of the Reefer Den, a 30's gangster movie-type. (Doubles as Jesus, George Washington)

MAE – An attractive, yet slightly haggard dame in her mid-30s, the hostess of the Reefer Den

RALPH WILEY – A denizen of the Reefer Den, formally a fraternity man, his college days ended long ago due to his reefer habit. (Doubles as Sally's Baby, Switch-Puller, Uncle Sam)

SALLY – A sexy and seductive resident of the Reefer Den, she possesses the libidinous soul of Mae West combined with the rat-a-tat moxie of vintage Barbara Stanwyck. (Doubles as Lady Liberty)

PLACARD GIRL – Throughout the play, she reinforces the warnings of the Lecturer by holding large signs that clearly state the moral of what we've just seen. (Doubles as Five-and-Dime Kid, Police Officer)

ENSEMBLE – Singing/dancing ensemble consisting of Reefer Zombies, Kids at the Five-and-Dime, Jungle Orgy dancers, Angels, and patriotic background chorus in the Star-Spangled Finale
